- Groundwater at a former gasoline service station was impacted by leaking underground storage tanks and associated piping. Although contaminant trends and geochemistry suggested that MNA could be an appropriate site management strategy, the need for more rapid site closure led to a decision to enhance biodegradation of BTEX and MTBE aerobically with injection of an oxygen releasing compound.
- The site managers asked: Was injection of the amendment effective in stimulation of BTEX and MTBE biodegradation? The answer was yes. Using Bio-Trap® samplers and analysis with QuantArray®-Petro, substantial stimulation of aerobic catabolic functional genes for BTEX and MTBE biodegradation was shown in response to amendment injection in multiple wells.
- Bio-Trap® samplers and analysis with the multiple qPCR platform QuantArray®-Petro provided cost-effective confirmation of the initial and ongoing efficacy of injection of the oxygen releasing compound providing confidence in the remediation strategy for the client and regulators.
