The First Commercially Available Metabolomics Analysis in the Industry

MetaArray™ employs the use of metabolomics to probe the thousands of small biomolecules within an environmental sample’s microbiome. These small compounds make up the metabolome of a system and the patterns of these untargeted metabolites correlate to environmental factors including microbiome health and activity.  MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing.  This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.

INFORMATIVE

This cutting edge MBT can act as a cost-effective screening method or an in-depth research tool. MetaArray™ is based on a growing database of metabolites and molecular features that provide insights into the microbial activity of a contaminated site. Because it incorporates information from the entire microbiome, it enhances the value of analyses like qPCR.

COST EFFECTIVE

Due to the low cost of analysis, MetaArray™ is a valuable tool for site screening. Using the actionable results, users can determine which sampling locations to analyze with additional tools.

 About MetaArray™:

Through statistical analysis of a sample’s extracted metabolome, MetaArray™ provides cost-effective look at the actual activity of the microorganisms. The metabolome changes depending on access to food and nutrients, the presence of competitors and inhibitors, and even the overall health and efficiency of the microbial community. Microbial Insights has begun to develop a database of molecular features that correlate with robust reductive dechlorination. Many of these key metabolite features are tracked based on their mass and retention times, but continued research will unveil their chemical identities and biochemical roles over time. The analysis can sort a sample into either strong or limited reductive dechlorination based on a snapshot of the metabolome within that sample. Trending the MetaArray™ data allows end-users to screen their sites and determine if certain areas are undergoing active reductive dechlorination or beginning to show signs of slowing activity.

Into the Future

Metabolomics is a powerful tool that can be applied to any industry.

  • Future forms of MetaArray™ will allow farmers to cost-effectively screen soil health for regenerative and precision agriculture.
  • Metabolites specific to reservoir souring will be used to predict its onset early enough to mitigate the problem.
  • Biochemical databases will be developed for tracking the efficiency of microbial hydrogen production.
  • The activity of bioengineered microorganisms will be tracked more easily through strain-specific biomarkers.
  • Similar to our qPCR database, the continued growth of the MetaArray™ database will result in better predictive capabilities and process-specific actionable data.
