ISSUE: With ubiquitous and long term use, petroleum hydrocarbon contamination can be the result of any number of current sources and/or historical releases. Environmental forensics, including systematic characterization of the oil, refined product, or impacted matrix, is needed to accurately determine how the contaminant was released, when the release occurred, and who was the responsible party or parties. Forensics can also aid in risk assessment and design of remediation systems, thus developing a comprehensive plan for site closure.
IMPACT: Environmental remediation can be expensive, and costs should be reasonably allocated between the responsible parties. Proper risk assessment and design of systems can lead to efficient bioremediation, thus saving millions of dollars during the treatment period and attaining closure at a faster pace.
